So what is the proof that education is still worth something in America?
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2008:
With Bachelor's degrees being the new high school diplomas, it is safe to say that education is definetly an important step to achieve and even be able to keep employment.
However, after speaking with different people in different hiring authorities I am finding that even the most entry level positions are being applied for by people holding Master's and Doctoral degrees because the job market is so closed at right now. Without some form of education and experience, you are not likely to be able to enter the job market shy of retail positions or food services where there is a high amount of turn over and a low retention rate.
If your current position is not in high demand, maybe now is the time to change career fields. There are several options depending on your ability to finance your education or flexibility needed to complete an education. Of course if you have any college education completed it will shorten the time and costs. There are 4 year private and state schools that cost anywhere between 20K-100K in the State of Texas. You can complete your education morning, evening, weekends or even in your pajamas from the comfort of your own home.
Education is waiting for you everywhere you turn so heed the words of generations past - School is cool - Stay in School - in this day and age it just might pay the bills too!

I agree with you. As a family whos been living off of 320 per week of UC and the 25.00 extra payment, I can sympathize with the difficulty. Its not easy. Prior to Danny being laid off, his boss implemented a pay cut, which amounted to almost a 400.00 monthly cut, we applied for SNAP and were denied becuase we were 17.00 over income limit. Danny was laid off about a week later becuase his boss said he just couldnt work it all out, pay wise and such. We returned to change the information on our application , since our income would severely drop now at being laid off, SNAP says we have to wait 2 mos to reapply because they base eligibility of the last 2 mos earnings. I utilized my resources and began taking advantage of different programs in my area to compensate. I order often from Angel Foos and there is a program here in my area that gives away the day old breads and baked goods from certain grocery stores. The job outlook is also as you have mentioned. Scouring 3 well known sites for employment on the internet, stopping at any place you see a sign, etc. It all appears to be lies, Danny went to one place that had a sign in saying Now Hiring, he went in with resume, they said fill out their application, it was a general info app.
ReplyDeleteI dont know about the Bachelors being the new high school diploma. I feel like a waste. All this time in school and no one even acknoeldges it. I applied at Head Start and told them I had my bachelors, pay increase was 1.12 WHAT? All that education and its a 1.12 higher than for someone with little to no education? I was LIVID. I have no idea about the economy. I have no idea what will happen and when, but everyone is suffering, and its equelly difficult when programs like snap cant lower their eligibility requirements to accomodate, knowing we're in a recession. As for us, we had to reevaluate our situation and look at all possible positive changes. We have decided to stick it out here until next year and then return to Colorado. In Colorado they have a daycare program we qualified for last time we were there, and im hoping to take advantage of it again so I can go to the midwifery school. The job outlook there is alot better than here and we have a few hands up on that, since we have family there whove offered danny some work. It will be best all around, Colorado is very 'crunchy' and I am sure my Doula and midwifery positions will be of great impact once I am ready to go. Sometimes people have to re evaluate the entire situation, and go from there, weigh pros and cons on whats best for your family, becuase the government isnt gonna do it for anyone. :(
